Recently, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology presented a report on Advanced Manufacturing, and they offered three reasons why we, as a nation, should care about the state of advanced manufacturing Goals and Objectives to advancing manufacturing technology.

On February 25, 2014, President Obama announced the selection of the winning team to lead the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, an Illinois consortium led by UI Labs and consisting of members throughout the upper Midwest and beyond. The awardee, UI Labs, brings excellent participation by strong industry partners engaged and leading this consortium.

As part of a plan to create a national repository of production machine performance data, DMDII is seeking permission from 1,000 manufacturers to instrument their plant floor machines. The idea is to collect real time operational data from machines—everything from acoustic emissions to operating temperatures—stream data to the cloud, then analyze it for insights into how the operation and maintenance of machines can be optimized. Over time, DMDII plans to expand the number of manufacturers participating in the program to several thousand.

The big data project will be joined by two other DMDII initiatives:
Research into how manufacturers can integrate 3D product design information with manufacturing, product usage, and end-of-life processes to create the “Digital Thread”
An advanced analytics initiative that will use a “Digital Manufacturing Commons” open source collaboration platform developed by General Electric to enable advanced collaboration and resource-sharing among manufacturers.

UI Labs has assembled a world-class team of more than 70 organizations from industry, government and academia, with both broad and deep experience in all aspects of product development, technology transfer and commercialization processes from design and prototyping to manufacturing at scale. The DMDI Institute will address the life cycle of digital data interchanged among myriad design, engineering, manufacturing and maintenance systems, and flowing across a networked supply chain.

   About Your Speaker
